The Punchbag is a darkly comic psychological tale where everyday domestic life slowly drifts into something far more unsettling. Blending deadpan absurdity with the creeping unease, it takes an ordinary suburban marriage and gives it a disturbingly unexpected twist.
Ignus is an unremarkable man who lives a quiet life with his endlessly critical wife, Polly. Hardly a day passes without Polly reminding him that he’s overweight, unfit, weak or simply “not much of a man.” Rather than argue, Ignus absorbs the insults with weary resignation. Determined to prove her wrong—or at least buy himself a little peace—he purchases a second-hand punchbag from eBay and hangs it in the garage. There, accompanied only by the dull thud of his fists and the occasional muttered complaint about his wife, it becomes his unlikely refuge.
Then the dreams begin.
Night after night, Ignus sees blood dripping from the punchbag. He dreams that a woman’s body is hidden inside, packed tightly amongst the stuffing. The visions become so vivid and convincing that he reports the bag to the police, convinced he has uncovered a murder. Their investigation reveals nothing more sinister than a collection of old clothes and rags, leaving Ignus humiliated and providing Polly with yet another reason to ridicule him.
But some dreams aren’t warnings about the past.
They’re previews of the future.
